This workshop is based on the professional development training workshop called Broader Impacts 101 developed by the National Alliance for Broader Impacts (NABI), a grassroots organization whose goal is to help improve and expand the efforts of scientists to develop broader impact (BI) programs and activities that benefit society. To pursue its goal, NABI engages in the following: helps identify and share best practices, model programs and evaluation methods; provides professional development for researchers; develops the necessary human resources required for sustaining BI programming; and, promotes cross-institutional collaboration and dissemination. This training is intended to help scientists develop more engaging and impactful broader impacts for their science, serving those that are new to the grant-writing world as well as veteran scientists who would like to strengthen and enhance their BI skills.

Members of NABI’s Steering Committee will lead this workshop, sharing their knowledge and experience developing and implementing BI activities.  Participants in this workshop will (a) receive an overview of the NSF Broader Impacts Criterion, and learn more about its evolution and history, (b) engage in hands-on activities that show you how to create, implement and evaluate your BI activities, and (c) learn about the various resources that exist to support your BI efforts. The BI workshop designed for CERF will include elements such as creating a broader impacts plan, integrating your broader impacts into your research, and evaluating your broader impacts. Participants will work in small groups to brainstorm and plan mock BI projects and then receive feedback from workshop facilitators and other participants.
