About the Webinar

The current distribution of tidal marshes is being modified by sea level rise. For the Science Advisory Board of NJDEP, we reviewed previous data on the major marsh systems in NJ (The Meadowlands, Raritan Bay, Barnegat Bay, and Delaware Bay) for changes in horizontal extent (acreage) over time and vertical changes (elevation changes) with regard to the rate of sea level rise.

Most marsh systems are not keeping pace with sea level rise. We discuss four potential remedies: marsh migration pathways, modifying Phragmites management, manipulating sediments (e.g. thin layer deposition), and living shorelines.

 About the Presenter

Dr. Judith S. Weis, a Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Rutgers University, received her bachelor's degree from Cornell, and MS and Ph.D. from NYU. Her research focuses on estuarine ecology and ecotoxicology, and she has published over 250 scientific papers, as well as books on salt marshes, fish, crabs, and marine pollution for the general public, and co-edited a technical book about Biological Invasions and Animal Behavior. She is interested in stresses in estuaries and their effects on organisms, populations, and communities. Much of her research has been in the NY/NJ area, but she has done research in Indonesia and Madagascar.

Dr. Weis is on the editorial board of BioScience, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Indonesia. She has been on advisory committees for US EPA, NOAA, and the National Academy of Sciences, and currently chairs the Science Advisory Board of NJ Department of Environmental Protection, co-chairs the Science and Technical Advisory Committee for the NY/NJ Harbor Estuary Program and serves on the NYC Waterfront Management Advisory Board. She chaired the Biology Section of AAAS, served on the boards of Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, the Association for Women in Science, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences, of which she was the President in 2001. She received the Merit Award from the Society of Wetland Scientists in 2016.
