CERF 2017 Field Trips

Come in time to take full advantage of this year’s conference location and explore the area on one of our six varied options for field trips on Sunday. It will be hard to choose between exploring the Bay, learn about local research, restoration and history or enjoying good food or drink with other CERF attendees. Be sure to scroll down to see all trips, and click on each for more info.

The Matunuck Oyster Bar in Narragansett, RI, is an award-winning farm-to-table restaurant, aquaculture farm, and organic produce farm located on the south coast of Rhode Island. This field trip starts with a tour of both of the farms, followed by lunch (on your own) at the restaurant. Participants will then join with a panel of Rhode Island’s fisheries leaders to discuss the intersection of estuarine science and commercial fishing.

Join Save the Bay on the M/V Elizabeth Morris for a half day boating adventure in Narragansett Bay. Save the Bay, a leading local non-profit organization, uses a hands-on approach to teach the public about Narragansett Bay’s ecology. This trip will give you the opportunity to examine the microscopic world of plankton on the ‘plankton tv’, trawl for fish and invertebrates from the Bay bottom waters, and test the water quality. If you’ve ever been curious about how estuarine ecological research is conducted, this is the trip for you!

Come visit the Field’s Point Wastewater Treatment Plant just down the road from the convention center. They have the largest IFAS system for nitrogen removal in the world! You will also get to see and learn about their wind turbines and award winning lab facilities.

The Narrow River (Pettaquamscutt Estuary) in southern Rhode Island is an ecological delight with a variety of ecosystems along its 9 km length. Ranging from anoxic basins in the northern end to tidal deltas in the southern end, with marsh restoration work, stormwater BMPs, non-point sources, and endangered birds and flowers in between, there is plenty to see via kayak. This all-day trip will include a stop on land to eat your provided box lunch inside and narration by scientists working here.

The Bay Campus, in Narragansett, RI, is the epicenter of marine science and education in Rhode Island. The Bay Campus is home to URI's highly acclaimed Graduate School of Oceanography, NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center's Narragansett Laboratory, and EPA's Atlantic Ecology Division Laboratory. This trip will include an overview of the ongoing research activities and tour of the facilities. We will then visit Castle Hill, Newport where oceanographer Alexander Agassiz wrote reports for the Challenger Expedition in 1876 and view some of Agassiz's artifacts. This trip includes a box lunch.

Enjoy an afternoon of beer tasting with fellow estuarine and coastal scientists. We will embark on a bus tour to visit several local breweries, ending at a local brewpub, within walking distance to the convention center and hotels. Light snacks will be provided.
